BILL AUSTIN Bill Austin was born in San Pedro, Calif., Oct. 18, 1928, but grew up in Oregon where he first began his football career as a high school guard and then onto Oregon State. The New York Giants drafted him in 1949, where he was a key player to their 1956 World Championship win. In 1958, he started his coaching career at Wichita State. Then the following year, he became Vince Lombardi's Offensive Line Coach for the Green Bay Packers. His first head coaching job was with the Pittsburgh Steelers in 1969 for one year until he took over the Washington Redskins as head coach for Vince Lombardi. From 1972 to 1985, he was offensive line coach for various teams, until he took his retirement in Las Vegas in 1985. In 1982, he was inducted into the Oregon Sports Hall of Fame. He was married to Goodrun Austin for 56 years, where they had four girls, Barbara, Deborah, Pamela and Marietta. He was the proud grandfather of five kids; and three great-grandkids. Services will be at 10 a.m., Friday, May 31, at Palm Mortuary-Northwest, 6701 N. Jones Blvd.
