STAN VERNOOY Stan VerNooy, 66, of Henderson, passed away June 7, 2013. Born Sept. 10, 1946, in New York City, he was raised in Bogota, N.J., graduating from Bogota High School in 1964. Attending Syracuse University and Brigham Young University, he graduated from BYU in 1968 with a mathematics degree. He then served in the U.S. Air Force, as a computer programmer at Andrews AFB. He subsequently attended the University of Maryland, earning a master's degree in math in 1973. After moves to Detroit and California, he went back to school to earn a Ph.D. He attended the University of Oregon, in Eugene, and fell in love with the school, the city and the state. Most of all, he fell in love with teaching and he soon embarked on a new career path. Teaching led back to California, to Arkansas, and, in 1998, to the College of Southern Nevada in Henderson. He loved music, math, teaching, waterfalls and the Ducks. Stan is survived by his wife, Anne Padgett; his brother, Wayne; and his two sons, Justin (Lindsey) and Dean (Tiana). Memorial services will be 7-8 p.m. Thursday, June 20, at Black Mountain Recreation Center, 599 Greenway Road, Henderson. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his memory to Susan G. Komen Southern Nevada, the American Cancer Society
, the American Red Cross, Three Square, or any other charity.
